Which song has more Spotify streams
This mini-game does not ask you to know the numbers by heart. It asks you to understand how streaming works, and that logic comes down to three ideas.
The first, and by far the most useful: streaming favours the recent. Spotify opened in 2008 and only took off in the mid 2010s. A classic from the 1980s, however universally known, therefore starts with a huge handicap against a hit from 2020. It is counter-intuitive, and it is what loses most duels.
The second: short tracks that flow easily do better, because playlists loop them. The third: an artist with one enormous hit concentrates everything on it, while an artist with a broad catalogue spreads their plays out. At equal fame, the standalone track often wins.
Where do the stream counts come from?
From the public tables at kworb.net, which aggregate the official Spotify counters. They are given in millions or in billions depending on the track.
Why does a classic so often lose to a recent track?
Because the counter does not measure fame, it measures streams since 2008. A song loved on the radio for thirty years had accumulated no streams at all before that date.
How many mistakes can you make?
One in practice mode: the run ends on the first wrong answer, and the gap between the two tracks narrows as you climb.
